Explanatory hypertext
=====================
Much of the appeal for hypertext centers on the concept
of "live-footnotes" or "electronic cross-references"
that provide additional information at the touch of a
button. <link04>
Explanatory I call these kinds of hypertext jumps "explanatory" as
hypertext jumps each jump provides expanded information on the current
=============== subject. Such jumps are useful as they often:
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ - provide instant access to more detailed information │
│ - save time in using an index for cross-references │
│ - reflect expert judgement on relationships │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Although they may seem perfect, explanatory hypertext
systems typically contain two fundamental defects:
Circular hypertext -- lost in network <link35>
Unclear hypertext -- need predictable jumps <link32 2>
The Solution? See transitive hypertext <link53> and semantic
============= taxonomies <link30> for details.
